Ägräs Distillery is entering an exciting new chapter following its acquisition by Ars Bibendi Oy, as reported by Anikó Lehtinen for Juomaposti. The change in ownership aims to revitalize the brand's product lineup, with a strong strategic focus on producing whisky for both domestic and international markets.
Following the acquisition, former master distiller Marttaleena Ruohomaa will lead this new development phase alongside investor Petri Saloperä through Ars Bibendi Oy. The new owners plan to expand the distillery’s whisky range—previously available only as limited releases—while honoring the heritage of its core products.
Founded in 2015, Ägräs built a solid reputation for craft spirits inspired by wild Finnish botanicals, focusing primarily on gin, aquavit, and long drinks. After several years based in the historic village of Fiskars, the distillery is relocating to a new facility. Operations will resume with a lean core team, with Ruohomaa taking the helm as head of the new company.
Unlocking the Potential of Finnish Whisky
In statements gathered by Juomaposti, Ruohomaa and Saloperä highlight Finnish whisky’s significant potential to gain a foothold in international markets. The numerous awards received by the country’s distilleries in recent years have helped strengthen Finland’s reputation in this category. Ruohomaa emphasises the distinctive qualities of local raw materials and the importance of collaboration in bringing its whisky to audiences beyond the country’s borders. For Saloperä, meanwhile, the acquisition represents the realisation of a longstanding passion for spirits and their production process.
The first whiskies crafted under Ruohomaa’s leadership are set to launch in 2027. Under Ars Bibendi Oy, Ägräs Distillery aims to drive its global expansion and cement its position as a standout name in Finnish craft whisky.
